Supported Causes
Faces of Kibera is a New York State nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping the rising number of orphans in Kibera, Kenya. Kibera is the largest slum in East Africa. With an estimated one million people concentrated in one square mile, the living conditions in Kibera are desperate for all, and particularly difficult for the children. Our goal is to push back against this tide of poverty, illness and deprivation by creating and supporting a community-based facility outside of Kibera to provide care, education and services to the orphans of Kibera. Rooney Mara is up against Emily Blunt and Rebecca Hall to star alongside Johnny Depp in sci-fi movie ‘Transcendence’, taking on the female lead.

Rooney Mara is up against Emily Blunt andRebecca Hall to play the female lead in ‘Transcendence’.

The ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ actress is one of the favourites to star alongsideJohnny Depp in Wally Pfister‘s first directing effort.

According to Deadline.com, Emily’s dates for ‘All You Need Is Kill’ are still being worked out, which may affect her availability versus Rooney and Rebecca.

Johnny will play a scientist whose brain is uploaded after his death into a supercomputer by female scientist Evelyn, who will be played by one of the three actresses.

Filming starts in March and the screenplay is written by newcomer Jack Paglen and was developed by Annie Marter and Straight Up Films.

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are executive producing for their longtime collaborator Pfister.

Wally recently spoke of his joy about getting Johnny to sign up for the sci-fi movie.

He said: ”I’m thrilled, and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative.” • Read full story »

Since zooming to stardom in last year’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara has gone from virtual unknown to that rare combination of serious actress and fashion-world darling. Recently named a face of Calvin Klein, Mara is no ingenue. Instead, she evokes the intensity of the seventies, when the world of filmmaking was dominated by passionate auteurs. As with those directors—and her brilliant mentor, David Fincher—Mara is both complicated and uncompromising.

Who from the seventies do you find interesting?

Stylewise, the person I’m most drawn to is Ali MacGraw. There was something about her that was very regal but very natural at the same time. We kind of modeled my character in The Social Network after her: I had a crocheted beret that was inspired by the one she wore in Love Story.

What was the worst fashion trend of that decade?
I find the way men dressed then to be kind of repulsive—especially disco style. I like almost all of the women’s fashion—and I think men in little shorts and high socks are really cute—but I don’t like anything shiny, and much of the seventies was shiny.

What’s your favorite movie of that era?
Paper Moon. I saw it only last year. David [Fincher] made me watch it, and I think I’ve seen it five times since then. My favorite scene is when Ryan O’Neal is talking about how he’s going to leave Addie [Tatum O’Neal, who plays his daughter in the movie]. They’re mad at each other, but Addie comes up with something clever, and they get back together. I love that ending—it’s not too happy-happy.
