Rooney Mara happy to transform for movie

Rooney Mara felt “happy” to get rid of her “very feminine” signature look while shooting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The actress underwent a dramatic transformation after learning she was to play the title character of Lisbeth Salander in the movie – which is based on Stieg Larsson’s popular Millennium book series.

Rooney’s character is a no-nonsense computer hacker and she had to rough up her girly appearance for the role. The star embraced the complete overhaul, which included chopping off her lusciously long locks into an unkempt, shaven, and jet-black style.

“I was very happy to cut my hair off. It made it easier to get into the character. I was happy to get rid of it. Really I was,” Rooney insisted to Style magazine, where she described her previous style as “very feminine, lacy, pink, whimsical and romantic”.

Rooney’s wardrobe choices had to alter because her image was so drastic. The 26-year-old star’s new look didn’t suit her old attire.

“My wardrobe has completely changed. It had to, partly because of my hair and partly because I stopped feeling comfortable in what I used to wear,” she explained.

“I don’t feel comfy in those clothes anymore because I have been living as Lisbeth for 14 months.”

Rooney’s transformation included the appearance of extensive body art and body and facial piercings. The star wanted the look to feel authentic.

“And I got my nipple done for real,” she revealed. “There is so much nudity in the film, I felt that was necessary. All the tattoos and piercings mean you never really feel naked as Lisbeth.”
