Rooney Mara has been cast as the lead in the Americanized take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and that should be a big deal, except no one really knows who Rooney Mara is. The 25-year-old New Yorker has only been working since 2005, mostly in smaller roles. She had a big part inYouth in Revolt but I’m not sure that was really the place to showcase her ability. She’ll be in The Social Network, but that’s still a ways off. If you’re really interested in checking out what Mara’s capable of, then you’ll want to check outThe Winning Season when it’s released on September 3rd.
The movie stars Sam Rockwell as an alcoholic turned girls basketball coach. Mara is one of his more troublesome team members, with a penchant for dating older dudes. Embedded below is a snippet from one of her more pivotal scenes in the film, in which she makes out with an older dude and Rockwell responds by kicking his ass. It’s good. Take a look:
If David Fincher’s take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is at all faithful to its source material Mara will have to put up with a lot more than creepy, older dude tongue. But it’s easy to imagine her looking the part of Lisbeth Salander. It’s hard to imagine her or anyone else being as good as Noomi Rapace, who played the character in the Swedish version, but I have a sneaking suspicion she’ll actually be good.
